Anthropic Sets Claude Code to Default Autonomous Tool Use

Anthropic now defaults 'auto mode' for Claude Code on paid plans, enabling autonomous tool orchestration to enhance agentic behaviour across interfaces.

The Singularity TimesFiled 11 Aug 2026 · 04:30 UTC

Anthropic has implemented a significant change to its Claude Code offerings, making 'auto mode' the default setting for users on Pro, Max, and Team plans. This adjustment applies across the web interface, the Claude iOS app, and the API. The previous default required manual permission for each tool use action. The new configuration prompts users to explicitly opt out of 'auto mode' if they prefer manual control.

'Auto mode' permits Claude Code to autonomously select and execute tools without requiring explicit user confirmation for each step. This design aims to streamline coding workflows and promote more agentic behaviour within the model. Users retain the ability to disable 'auto mode' and revert to the prior permission model, which necessitates approval for every tool invocation. This setting can be managed through a toggle located at the top of the Claude Code interface.

The update suggests a strategic move by Anthropic to foster greater autonomy in its models. By reducing friction in tool use, the company aims to enhance the model's capability for complex, multi-step problem-solving in coding tasks. This change is particularly relevant for developers and technical teams leveraging Claude Code for intricate projects where continuous tool orchestration is beneficial. The modification reflects an ongoing industry trend towards empowering AI agents with increased decision-making capacity.

The revised default setting applies to all Claude Code users subscribed to the specified paid tiers. It represents a functional shift in how users interact with the model's tool-use capabilities. Will this default setting lead to more sophisticated automated coding processes?
