DeepSeek Seeks $8 Billion, Invests in Unitree Robotics
DeepSeek initiated an $8 billion funding round, targeting a $74 billion valuation, and acquired a stake in humanoid robotics firm Unitree.
DeepSeek, a prominent artificial intelligence developer, has reopened a funding round with the objective of securing $8 billion. This capital injection is sought at a valuation of $74 billion for the company. The previous funding attempt in March of this year did not meet its target.
Simultaneously, DeepSeek has diversified its strategic investments by acquiring a stake in Unitree, a Chinese manufacturer specialising in humanoid robots. The specifics of this acquisition, including the size of the stake or its monetary value, have not been disclosed. This move aligns DeepSeek with the growing trend of AI companies investing in robotics hardware.
Unitree is recognised for its development of quadrupedal robots, such as the Go2 model. The company also produces a bipedal humanoid robot named H1. The H1 model is notable for its agile locomotion and robust design, demonstrated in promotional materials performing tasks like walking on varied terrain and resisting impacts.
DeepSeek's interest in Unitree suggests a broader strategy to integrate advanced AI capabilities with physical robotics. This integration could lead to the development of more sophisticated autonomous systems. The company's core business involves large language models, including DeepSeek Coder and DeepSeek LLM. These models are available in various sizes, ranging from 7 billion to 67 billion parameters. DeepSeek also offers an open-source multimodal model, DeepSeek-VL, which supports both text and image inputs.
The current funding round's success would significantly increase DeepSeek's financial resources. The $8 billion target reflects a substantial valuation for an AI firm in the current market. This investment could fuel further research and development in both AI models and their application in robotics. What will be the specific synergies between DeepSeek's AI and Unitree's robotics platforms?
