Nasdaq Composite Achieves New High Amidst AI Sector Growth
The Nasdaq Composite index closed at a record 17,601.76 points, driven by significant gains in AI-aligned technology firms, even as US Treasury yields increased.
The Nasdaq Composite index closed at an all-time high of 17,601.76 points on Wednesday. This milestone represents a 0.88% increase for the session. The index has now posted gains in four of its last five trading days.
Several prominent technology companies contributed significantly to this ascent. Oracle shares climbed 13.3%, following the announcement of new AI partnerships and increased revenue projections. Broadcom also saw a substantial rise, up 12.3%, after reporting strong quarterly results and a positive forecast driven by AI demand. Both firms provided details regarding their collaboration with Google Cloud.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) experienced a 4.4% increase in its American Depository Receipts (ADRs) during the session. Shares of Apple, a major component of the tech sector, were up 0.77%. Nvidia, another key player in AI hardware, saw its stock price rise by 3.5%.
These gains occurred despite a broader market context of rising US Treasury yields. The 10-year Treasury yield rose approximately 5 basis points to 4.38%. The 2-year Treasury yield also increased by about 7 basis points, reaching 4.82%. Typically, higher interest rates can present headwinds for growth stocks, including many technology firms.
The S&P 500 index also closed higher, advancing 0.85% to reach 5,421.03 points. This marks the first time the S&P 500 has closed above the 5,400 level. In contrast, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lagged, falling 0.17% or 66 points to finish at 38,712.21. This divergence highlights a concentrated strength within the technology-heavy Nasdaq and parts of the S&P 500.
The recent market movements underscore a persistent investor focus on companies demonstrating direct exposure and growth potential within the artificial intelligence ecosystem. How long can this sector leadership sustain such market momentum?
