US Startups Secure $4.29 Billion in Early August Funding

US startups secured $4.29 billion in funding during early August, with significant investments in AI infrastructure and control-plane technologies across 209 rounds.

US startups attracted $4.29 billion in venture capital across 209 funding rounds between 1 and 7 August. This represents an increase in total capital deployed compared to the previous week's $2.55 billion. The number of deals, however, decreased from 243 rounds.

Seed funding accounted for the majority of deals with 114 rounds. This stage generated $409.8 million in capital. Early-stage funding comprised 68 rounds, securing $1.99 billion. Late-stage funding saw 27 rounds, raising $1.89 billion.

The AI sector continued to demonstrate investment resilience. Companies focused on AI infrastructure and control-plane technologies received significant capital injections. Notable rounds included Lightmatter's $155 million Series C for photonics-based AI compute and MosaicML's $100 million Series B for its machine learning operations platform. Cohere also secured $270 million for its enterprise language models. This trend indicates sustained interest in foundational AI capabilities.

Several other sectors also experienced notable funding activity. Fintech companies raised $367.8 million across 15 rounds. Healthcare and biotech firms secured $350.3 million over 29 rounds. E-commerce and retail tech companies attracted $254.5 million in 12 rounds. Cybersecurity startups received $186.8 million from 11 rounds.

Geographically, California-based startups led in funding, attracting $2.51 billion across 74 rounds. New York companies secured $703.1 million over 37 rounds. Texas-based firms raised $311.2 million in 14 rounds. Massachusetts startups collected $226.5 million from 17 rounds.

This funding period saw a concentration of capital in fewer, larger deals. Will this pattern of fewer, larger rounds continue to dominate the venture landscape?
