In manufacturing, AI is not arriving as a moonshot; it is arriving as a night-shift worker for specific, measurable jobs. Five beachheads recur. Predictive maintenance reads sensor, ERP and maintenance-log signals together to flag a failing asset before a line goes down — the value is downtime avoided, a number a plant manager already owns. Multi-agent scheduling lets planning, materials and labour be renegotiated in real time as demand and supply shift. Quality and compliance logs non-conformance at source, writes audit trails automatically and assembles regulatory packs on demand. Supply-chain sensing watches global supplier networks for anomalies and aligns inventory to real signal. And the ERP copilot answers natural-language questions — 'show me at-risk orders this week' — grounded in the system of record. What unites them is that each maps to an existing operational metric, which is why manufacturing, with its OEE, yield and downtime numbers, is an unusually fertile first home for enterprise AI.
